Social networking is more then just facebook, myspace, and twitter. Social networking is a service that you can find on the internet that fucuses on building relationships among people who share interests and similar backgrounds. Services like this allow members to share just about anything that they want. From golfing, gardening, developing friendships or professional alliances, finding employment, business-to-business marketing and even groups sharing information about the end of the Mayan calander.

Social networking has caused us to feel like we have to keep up on everything that is going on in everyone's lives. While it may be fun to get into contact with someone you haven't seen in years, I believe that social networking is having a negative impact on the way that we are interacting with family and friends. Let me explain why......

I have to admit that I am one of the 500,000,000 members of the facebook community. I have been drawn into drama that would not have been available outside of a cyber forum. I have also found myself wasting time on games like Farmville and Typing maniac.

With the ease of social networking available on our phones, it seems like we spend more time checking comments and newsfeeds then spending quality time reading a book to our children. I also believe that the quality of our social interactions on social networking sites are lower then they should be. The posting tend to be brief sentences and people do not think before the post something in their status update. This behavior creates shallow and transient relationships with one another. Social networking has caused a "media without borders" phenomena. We are unstoppable when it comes to communicating. A micro-blog can influence a legal change. A group on facebook can question a winner of American Idol (A winner who is ironically chosen by the people). Social Networking can be used to change the way that we recieve and react to what is going on in our world.
